Skincare Routine

Consistent and appropriate skincare routine is so, so, so important! It is how you care for your skin day-to-day that lays the foundation for achieving your ideal skin, keeping it healthy and nourished for many years, and delaying more invasive treatments for as long as possible. Or, as I like to call it, "Age Later".

My criteria for a good skincare routine is simple:

  • You can follow it consistently and regularly

  • It cleanses, hydrates, and protects your skin

  • It addresses your particular skin concerns

  • It is effective, yet gentle

So let's talk about the steps in the routine and the products you should use.

cleanse

Cleansing skin thoroughly removes impurities and pore-clogging oils. It should be the first step in your skincare routine. It's important to select a cleanser that is gentle enough to avoid irritating and drying out your skin -- I swear by the Image Skincare line of cleansers. Occasionally, you may also incorporate a mild exfoliating product, if your complexion seems dull due to a buildup of skin cells and impurities.

hydrate

Once your skin is clean and its pores are open, it is time to deliver hydration and nourishment. Select high-quality ingredients that have proven skin benefits, such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, retinoids, vitamin C, peptides, and other powerful hydrating and anti-aging ingredients. The products you can use may include a serum, face cream, and eye cream.

protect

Finally, it's important to protect your skin from pollutants, dryness, and sun damage. A good moisturizer with sunscreen (I recommend an SPF of at least 30) is a must!

BONUS TIPS:

  • Consistency is key. When you start using a new skincare product, give it at least a few weeks before you see the results. If you switch up your products too often, you won't know for sure which ingredients are actually making the difference -- and which ones are irritating your skin. When you travel, bring travel versions of your skincare products so you can continue your skincare routine on the road.

  • Don't forget the neck. The skin of your neck is even more delicate, sensitive, and prone to aging than the skin of your face. Include your neck in your daily skincare routine, and don't be surprised if you find that you need to use a milder version of your face products.

  •  You get what you pay for. Sure, we all have an 85-year-old great-aunt with gorgeous skin who swears by Vaseline and Ponds -- doesn't mean it's a good idea. Good quality costs. Innovation and research costs. Regulatory and ethical compliance costs. What you put on your skin day after day is your investment in how your skin is going to look and feel many years down the road. Let's make sure you get a good return on that investment!
