My Story
Hi y’all! My name is Amy, and I am a licensed esthetician with over 24 years of experience, serving Kansas City area. I hail from Texas but have embraced my beloved Kansas City as my home for the past 8 years. Let me tell you about my professional journey, skincare philosophy, and the things that matter the most to me in life.
In Her Own Words: Q&A With Amy
What made you pursue a career in this field?
I started my journey in Austin, Texas in 2003, opening up Amy’s Skin Studio. I have built my practice on educating and consulting my clients on the best course of action for anti-aging, acne, and any other skin irregularities. I believe that true beauty comes from within – and my mission is to help reveal that inner glow in my clients.
What is your secret to healthy, beautiful skin?
For me, it's all about slowing down the aging process without it being so noticeable, so you can opt for less invasive procedures in the future. My approach is a simple 75/25 split. 75% of what you do for your skin is at-home care – the rest is having me consult you on what your best options are for “Aging Later”.
What do you love about what you do?
What’s exciting about my job is seeing amazing results and transforming someone’s skin, but also meeting new people and building those relationships. It’s truly rewarding for me to make someone feel good about themselves, and be a part of building their confidence through healthy skin.
There's something to be said for understanding your product like the back of your hand...
I have been blessed with having my hard work and dedication recognized. In 2019, I was named Aesthetician of the Year by Image Skincare, a distinction awarded to those who practice to the highest standards of our industry. Today, I am licensed in 3 states and have worked with doctors, lawyers, CEOs, socialites, Grammy®-award-winning musicians, journalists, public figures, professional athletes, and politicians, just to name a few. But I am most proud of working with my clients who are Veterans – it means a lot to me that they put their complete trust in me.
What makes you different?
I focus on the science of the skin. I’ve spent well over 24 years perfecting my craft, studying the ingredients used in skincare, the techniques and clinical devices – all to achieve your personal best result. Everything that I use on my clients is what I use on myself. At 50 years old, I understand the needs of aging skin and what it takes to keep it looking younger, for longer, with using less invasive techniques.
What do you look for in an esthetician?
First thing I look at, is their knowledge of skin and their expertise in ingredients and techniques. These are the estheticians in the area that I trust and look up to: Rosa Wells at Rooted Soul Esthetics KC and Emma Powis at Oleander Aesthetics.
What do you do outside of work?
I think it’s so important to give the time you can spare back to the community. I’ve loved working with Big Brothers Big Sisters, Make a Wish, and Susan G Komen Foundation, and, most recently, Veterans Community Project. Travel, seeing live music, and visiting my family back in Texas are also a big part of who I am. Lately, I have been collecting vintage vinyls for my old Curtis Mathis Hi Fi Stereo Console.
What challenges have you overcome in your professional path?
It has always been my dream to have a store front, and that vision became a reality for me in Kansas City. There is an abundance of med spas and skincare salons in Johnson County, but I noticed a need for an esthetician in KCMO that specializes in corrective skincare, client education, and hair removal specialties. Sadly, I lost my first KC storefront to a devastating fire in 2019. All the hard work that went into creating that space, completely gone. I was not deterred and got to work at a new Skin Studio KC location.
Then, in 2020, the entire world was shaken by the COVID-19 pandemic, which affected countless families and pretty much every public-facing business, including mine. What these challenges have given me is the knowledge that we can always find the strength within to keep going on and pursuing our dreams. Today, Skin Studio KC has a beautiful new home in West Waldo – and I’m so excited to welcome my valued clients there!
What's With All The Cool Art In The Studio?
I wanted my workspace to reflect my passion for music because it’s such a big part of my life. So I’ve commissioned these original pieces of art from local artists whose styles I love – it makes me smile whenever I look at images of my favorite musicians, such as Tina Turner, Debbie Harry, Freddie Mercury, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Lady Gaga, and many more. Among these musicians, there is also a hometown athlete – try to spot our own #15 Patrick Mahomes! I guess you can’t leave Texas at home!
